GIDDY UP-DATE NEWSLETTER: The conflict in Gaza

Mar 16, 2024

Hi folks, U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper here.

Since the horrific October 7th attacks, Israel has undertaken a campaign against Hamas – the Iranian-backed terrorist group responsible for the hostage-taking and massacre of innocent civilians. Israel has the right to defend itself against Hamas, but it must follow international law and take all necessary precautions to limit civilian casualties in Gaza.

In November, I wrote to you with my call for a humanitarian pause in Gaza. A few weeks later, an agreement for a seven-day temporary ceasefire brokered by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt led to the release of 105 hostages and for vital humanitarian aid to reach Gazan civilians.

support the restoration of a mutual ceasefire as soon as possible, the release of Hamas-held hostages, and the delivery of more humanitarian aid into Gaza. We must see an end to this conflict and reach a two-state solution where durable peace and security can prosper.

President Biden has warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against an invasion of Rafah, saying it would not be constructive to long-term peace efforts. I agree. Invading Rafah would not bring the two sides any closer to peace. And as Palestinians face a lack of access to food, water, and medical supplies, it would only exacerbate the humanitarian crisis.

Our office is closely monitoring the conflict, and we know many of you are deeply affected by it. As always, feel free to share your opinion and make your voice heard by contacting our office here
