Hickenlooper, Bennet Introduce Resolution Commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the Columbine High School Shooting

Apr 19, 2024

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senators John Hickenlooper and Michael Bennet introduced a resolution commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting. The resolution honors the victims and survivors of Columbine and commends the bravery of the first responders to the shooting.

“On April 20, 1999, Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado was the site of a devastating shooting that resulted in the deaths of 12 students and 1 teacher, left more than 20 others injured, and forever changed the lives of the family members, classmates, friends and others in the school and community of the victims,” wrote Hickenlooper and Bennet in the resolution. “[O]n this 25th anniversary, the Senate… remembers the victims and honors the survivors of the Columbine High School shooting; and… reaffirms its commitment to fostering safe educational environments for all students.”

On April 20, 1999, an attack at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado killed 12 students and one teacher and left more than 20 others injured. Twenty-five years later, the community continues to remember and honor those lost in the massacre and remains grateful for the bravery of local, state, and federal law enforcement who responded to the shooting.

This week, Hickenlooper urged Congress to pass gun safety legislation at a press conference commemorating the 25th anniversary of Columbine. He also met with Tom Mauser, whose son Daniel Mauser was killed in the Columbine shooting, and Kiki Leyba, a Columbine High School teacher who survived the shooting, in DC this week.

Hickenlooper has long advocated for common-sense solutions to address gun violence in the United States. Hickenlooper supported the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which expanded red flag laws, closed the boyfriend loophole, expanded background checks for young gun purchasers, and made historic investments in community-based mental health and violence prevention programs. Hickenlooper is also a co-sponsor of the Assault Weapons Ban, the Background Check Expansion Act, the Equal Access to Justice of Gun Violence Act, and Ethan’s Law. As Governor, Hickenlooper enacted universal background checks and a ban on high-capacity magazines after the 2012 Aurora theater shooting in Colorado.
