WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senators John Hickenlooper and Bill Cassidy, along with five of their Senate colleagues, introduced a bipartisan resolution to recognize October as National Dyslexia Awareness Month.
“Early screening for, and early diagnosis of, dyslexia are critical for ensuring that individuals with dyslexia receive focused, evidence-based intervention,” wrote Hickenlooper and colleagues.
Dyslexia is the most common learning disability affecting 1 in 5 individuals’ ability to speak, read, and spell. However, many students still fall through the cracks. Children who are not diagnosed and treated for dyslexia are more likely to experience lower career wages, reduced graduation rates, and increased chances of incarceration over their lifetime.
Last year, Hickenlooper and Cassidy introduced the 21st Century Dyslexia Act to help students get appropriate dyslexia accommodations within the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
