Commissioner Becky Mitchell represents Colorado in the Upper Colorado River Commission
WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper announced that Becky Mitchell will join him as his guest at President Biden’s State of the Union address tomorrow, Thursday, March 7th.
“Commissioner Mitchell understands the state of the West depends on the state of the Colorado River,” said Hickenlooper. “We can’t just do nothing while our rivers run dry. Commissioner Mitchell has Colorado’s back as we prepare for a drier future.”
Commissioner Mitchell represents Colorado as one of the four commissioners on the Upper Colorado River Commission (UCRC) and the state’s lead negotiator on Colorado River issues. The UCRC helps negotiate sustainable solutions for Colorado River Basin states, the federal government, and Tribal Nations. Previously, Mitchell led the Colorado Water Conservation Board, Colorado’s top water agency.
This week, the Upper Colorado River Basin states released a proposal on improving the sustainability of the Colorado River as part of the Bureau of Reclamation’s process for determining operations of the Colorado River after current agreements expire in 2026.
