CONVEY Act directs federal land transfer to Mesa County

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators John Hickenlooper and Michael Bennet cheered Senate passage of their Clifton Opportunities Now for Vibrant Economic Yields (CONVEY) Act, which directs the Bureau of Land Management to sell 31 acres of land to Mesa County for economic development in Clifton. The bill now heads to the president’s desk to be signed into law.

“The federal government has already determined that it no longer needs this land, and Mesa County has plans for ways to put it to work,” said Hickenlooper. “This is a win-win for the federal government and for Mesa.”

“Mesa County has made significant strides to secure a vibrant future for Clifton, and our legislation would be one more step towards prosperity for the community,” said Bennet. “That’s why I’m glad to join Senator Hickenlooper in calling on the Senate to ensure this agreement between the County and Bureau of Land Management is signed into law.”

The CONVEY Act directs the Secretary of the Interior to convey 31.1 acres of Federal land located near Clifton to Mesa County. Mesa County has long supported the purchase and plans to use the land to encourage economic development in the town of Clifton.

The 31 acres are part of a 39-acre parcel originally withdrawn to the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) for the Grand Valley Reclamation Project, but BOR has since relinquished the 31 acres considered in the sale. The bill requires the sale to be conducted at fair market value.

Today, Senator Hickenlooper spoke on the Senate floor in support of the CONVEY Act. His full remarks are available HERE.
